Here's how to make a giant piece of wall art for your room. Choose some fabric with a large-scale pattern. Go to your local art supply store and buy 4 lengths of wood frame made for stretching canvas. The wood strips have corners designed to interlock. (Or you can cover an existing blank stretched canvas, but it will get pricey if you go very big.) At my art store these wood strips were standing in bins, available in lengths all the way from super short to too long to manage. I bought 2 each of 50" and 34." Each piece was a couple bucks. Push your corners together, pounding them with a hammer if needed. Cut your fabric to a size somewhat larger than your frame; you'll need enough to wrap around to the back. Iron your fabric. Position your fabric the way you like it, and use a staple gun to tack it down. I stapled all along a long edge, then did the opposite side, pulling it very tight. Next do the short sides, one at a time. Cut off any extra fabric that hangs over the edges of the... See less

WHAT YOU NEED: Drinking glasses, handmade rice or fiber paper, tape measure or ruler, scissors, sponge, raffia ribbon, tea lights Ordinary smooth-sided drinking glasses, 4 to 6 inches high, make excellent luminarias. Cover the glasses with strips of handmade rice or fiber paper (a 22- by 28-inch sheet covers a dozen glasses). To make the paper strips: measure the circumference of the glasses and add 1 inch for overlap, measure the height and add 1 inch, then draw the rectangles. For attractive "feather" edges, moisten the lines with the edge of a sponge, then gently tear out the strips. Wrap each glass with paper; tie with raffia ribbon and knot. For easy cleanup, float tea lights in 1/2 inch of water to prevent the wax from sticking to the glass's bottom. You can make a dozen in 20 minutes. See less

Reversible Oilcloth Placemats makes 4 placemats: 1/2 yard of oilcloth (1/4 yard of each print), pen, pinking shears, sewing glue or sewing machine, ruler or a box lid or book to trace, iron. When sewing fast and loose like this without a pattern, I think the best thing is to find an object you can trace directly on the fabric. I used a box lid that was 15" x 12". Find an object around that house that works for you, or just measure out the shape with a ruler. Iron wrong side of the oilcloth on a low setting if it has deep crinkles from being folded. Trace or measure out shapes on the wrong sides of both pieces of oilcloth. Cut out with pinking shears. Put one cut-out shape on a flat surface, wrong side up. Place the other pattern of oilcloth on top, wrong sides together and printed side facing you. Line up edges to your satisfaction. Pin if sewing and stitch along all four edges, or carefully run sewing glue along the edges between the two pieces of oilcloth, press and smooth. Let dry.... See less

I started making chandeliers after finding about 40 facetted glass drops in a pile of rubbish. Initially I thought I couldn't make a chandelier with them because that would be too obvious, however, I later succumbed and have been making them ever since. When I started to gather other things to make a structure with, I discovered that all the things I needed were already there just waiting for me to assemble them. I searched in charity shops, car boot sales and scrap metal yards. I don't remember ever making a decision to use kitchen items I just found that they supplied so many useful forms, like circular metal objects - sometimes already with holes in. I prefer to work with things I've found and let their qualities dictate what happens. A piece begins with a really simple set of ideas, a shape, a colour combination and the objects I want to use. I liked the idea of making something opulent - a chandelier - but out of humble objects. Making things by reusing satisfies many needs and... See less

Start with two empty, clean, and dry juice bags. Slit very carefully the bottom of the bag and rinse with water and air dry or use a paper towel if you can't wait to get started. Decide which color you want for the outside and for the inside of your coin purse. Fold it over at the top | just a bit to the backside of pouch and stitch it down. I used a zigzag stitch and white thread. TIP: These bags are not forgiving so you can't re-do these, once stitched there is no ripping out seams and re-sewing. Fold down the other bag non-color to non-color almost in half but about an inch from the bottom will be showing of the back of the bag and stitch across the top which is now the fold in the middle. Place the smaller one you just folded down wrong sides together onto the main color pouch and stitch around sides and bottom. Fold top down and crease and use a sticky back Velcro for the closure.
