We've recently updated our storage test bed, moving to a spanking new ASUS P5Q Deluxe and a dual-core Penryn CPU. The key difference here is the newer Intel ICH10R I/O controller hub. We're also using Windows Vista exclusively for testing storage performance. We tested the RocketRAID against the Intel ICH10R. Normally, you wouldn't use a fairly low-end card like the 3120 in a premium motherboard with ICH10R, but we wanted to compare the card to the largest installed base of RAID controllers on the market. Bear in mind that most buyers of the 3120 will be installing into motherboards that lack a built-in RAID controller. We tested performance against both RAID 0 and RAID 1. I've had to crank up the three-speed, 120mm case fans to their medium setting to keep temperatures reasonable, and the middle setting is much louder than the lowest setting. For the new system, I'm moving to Core 2, though I'm wrestling with whether I should go with quad-core or stick with Core 2 Duo. Being the insecure geek I am, I might feel inadequate if I don't drop in a quad-core CPU and push the clock rate up just a little. And I'm still on the fence when it comes to motherboards: Intel 975? Intel 965? The new Nvidia 680i? The 680i boards offer some nifty new features, but I'm never going to run SLI, even though this system is also my primary gaming rig. For our install I used a JetWay Micro MB with a AMD 550 processor and 2Gb of Crucial RAM. The build included a HP DVD Burner and a Memorex CD Burner, both a Seagate drive and a Fujitsu drive totaling about 140 Gb, an Abit FX 5200, a Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS, an Intel 1000 LAN card and a generic video capture card round out the build. Like many starter HTPC builds, this PC is a montage of spare parts from my gaming rigs. You can often squeeze by with a good Frankenstein setup just to learn the HTPC ropes.
