I spend over an hour every weekday on my bike, commuting: 100 miles a week. As such, it's a major part of my life. Here's the gear I have and the gear I want for it.

Right now my bike is leaning up against a wall at home, and the dry wall isn't taking too nicely too that. This would be great for having a place to put it without any more damage to the house.

My hybrid bike is looking more and more like a road bike over time -- this is yet another step in that direction. I'm thinking about the 1" tires. I think they'll provide the low rolling resistance I want, yet still have enough tread for the rainy season. The only reason I don't want to pick them up right now is I've still got a bunch of tubes for wider tires that I should go through first (not to mention a few wider tires).

Great idea if you are needing to bring stuff along with you. Pretty sexy addition if you ask me too =]

Never thought of it _that_ way -- I mean, they're made to be able to carry more junk in the trunk. :-) But I suppose from the viewpoint of eco-conscience being sexy, yeah, definitely.

Crank Brothers Eggbeater...

SHOE COMPATIBILITY: 2-bolt SPD-Style | WEIGHT: 294g

TAGS: pedals

Highlights: Our Price: $64.99

Not quite as light as the Eggbeater SL's I've got on my bike right now, but still a great pedal, and for $45 on sale, it's a deal that can't be beaten.

So what is this again?

These are actually the pedals. Whereas your standard consumer bikes just have flat pedals that you wear normal shoes with, one of the best upgrades you can make is putting on "clipless" pedals (so named because they don't have toe clips to go over the tops of your shoes), where you have a cleat on the bottom of each shoe that clips into the pedal. That gives you power spinning all the way around, not just on the down-stroke. Many people are scared by the idea of being physically attached to their bike, but it's really very natural -- kicking out of them when you need to is really intuitive, and you stay in them when that's better. Just last week I went down on wet pavement, but I didn't get a scratch, in part because my feet stayed in place, so the pedal hit the ground instead of my leg. I love the eggbeater pedals because you can clip into them on any of the four sides, and it's very easy to find the mount point -- much more so than the two-sided SPD pedals I replaced with them.

I wore out my SRAM PG850 much too quick because failed to replace the chain when I should have. My LBS had the PG830 here in stock to replace it, which is a touch heavier, but sitting right on the axle, I probably won't notice.

Just had this installed to replace my completely worn Specialized FutureShock (which I think was actually a rebranded Rock Shox). It rides like a dream. Since most of my riding is on pavement, I have the preload cranked way up, which has increased my average speed by a good MPH or so. I really notice it on wet pavement because I'm now going so fast I'm kicking up all the spray into my face. The only downside to this fork was that it doesn't have a lockout, but the preload goes high enough that I don't really notice, plus if I actually hit something, there's no pain to me, the fork, or the bike. The reason I went with this one is that the steerer tube is sold separately, so I could still get a 1" threaded tube for my increasingly antiquated ride.

I haven't tried Slime's superthick before -- I used to prefer the superthick tubes for better thorn resistance, but I changed to regular slime tubes as my standard tubes because I had so many quality problems with the superthick tubes. I hope that these are of a higher quality, given that they're a name brand, plus I'll have the flat protection of both a thick wall and slime.

These tubes are great for carrying along as spares because they're so light, yet with the slime they still offer some flat protection (which has saved me many a time). Many riders prefer this as their main tube because the light weight provides for less rolling resistance, but I still prefer a heavier weight tube if I'm switching it out at home to provide better flat protection.

I've taken to using more and more SRAM gear, which seems to work pretty well -- as long as I remember to replace the chain every 1000 miles or so... that was a rear cassette I really didn't want to replace. So I need to pick up a few extra chains to start replacing them periodically.

I have to replace the fork on my MTB, and it seems that none of the forks with a 1" steerer tube anymore support caliper brakes. Since I can't do disc brakes without replacing my Spinergy's (not likely!), I'm going linear pull. Since most of my components are XTR, I'm keeping with that. I understand that these have a double linear pull on them, which makes the pads hit the rims evenly, instead of at an angle, giving better braking power and more even wear. We'll see how well they work as soon as my new fork arrives.

To go with my new XTR linear pull brakes, I got XTR cables. Is there any advantage of XTR over generic cables? Doubt it, but I got a deal on them, making the price difference negligible, so why not?

I had a pair of Kenda Kross 1.75"s on my ride, but I picked up a rock this past week that tore up the rear. This was the closest thing my LBS (local bike shop) had, which looks remarkably like the Kross, only it's a 1.95", so I just got it installed today while I wait for a couple Kenda Krisps, which is the closest thing I could find to the Kross, as the Kross is apparently no longer made in a 1.75".

This tires look really nice!

It's actually a really nice tire, especially for the price! I just wish they made them thinner. The Kross had a great grip to it, but the new Kendas I put on don't really (hence the wipe-out I mentioned above).

I like the idea of a reusable gel flask to cut down on the amount of trash generated by the single use gel packets.

I cant stand gel, it feels funny going down my throat.

I only use it for my long, hard rides -- when your blood sugar gets too low, you really don't care what the source feels like. On one ride a couple months ago, I was a couple miles from my destination, and I didn't think I was going to make it, but after a hit of gel I felt much better and made it without a problem.
