The 10s1 sounds to be the best chain on the market: lightweight, long-lasting and it's got a link that can be removed and put back on (like SRAM's 9-speed and lower chains, UNLIKE SRAM's 10-speed chains). They've also got the 10s0, which still looks to be a really solid chain for a lot less muula (although it's still probably more than most people are used to paying for a chain). My hybrid bike is looking more and more like a road bike over time -- this is yet another step in that direction. I'm thinking about the 1" tires. I think they'll provide the low rolling resistance I want, yet still have enough tread for the rainy season. The only reason I don't want to pick them up right now is I've still got a bunch of tubes for wider tires that I should go through first (not to mention a few wider tires). Posted by  zow  at 7:27 PM on 8/16/09

Definitely! I think a lot of people bought mountain bikes because it was the thing to do, or the way they're set up was more comfortable (especially prior to the resurgence of cruiser bikes about five years ago), but the tires really suck if you're just bopping around town, so I think this is a great way to remedy that. (08/16/09) SHOE COMPATIBILITY: 2-bolt SPD-Style | WEIGHT: 294g

Not quite as light as the Eggbeater SL's I've got on my bike right now, but still a great pedal, and for $45 on sale, it's a deal that can't be beaten. Posted by  zow  at 7:08 PM on 8/16/09

These are actually the pedals. Whereas your standard consumer bikes just have flat pedals that you wear normal shoes with, one of the best upgrades you can make is putting on "clipless" pedals (so named because they don't have toe clips to go over the tops of your shoes), where you have a cleat on the bottom of each shoe that clips into the pedal. That gives you power spinning all the way around, not just on the down-stroke. Many people are scared by the idea of being physically attached to their bike, but it's really very natural -- kicking out of them when you need to is really intuitive, and you stay in them when that's better. Just last week I went down on wet pavement, but I didn't get a scratch, in part because my feet stayed in place, so the pedal hit the ground instead of my leg. I love the eggbeater pedals because you can clip into them on any of the four sides, and it's very easy to find the mount point -- much more so than the two-sided SPD pedals I replaced with them. Posted by zow at 10:58 PM on 10/23/09 Report Spam

So what is this again? Posted by dreapuff at 9:28 PM on 10/23/09 Report Spam

dreapuff: It's a bike pedal. You wear special shoes that clip in to it. It makes you more efficient. Posted by firetrucks at 6:48 AM on 7/28/11 Report Spam

I wore out my SRAM PG850 much too quick because failed to replace the chain when I should have. My LBS had the PG830 here in stock to replace it, which is a touch heavier, but sitting right on the axle, I probably won't notice. Posted by  zow  at 7:50 PM on 3/8/09

For how much I depend on my bike(s), I've been learning how to fix more and more on them. Now, cassettes are still something I'm not going to do because I don't have a cassette tool, but the next time I need to replace one, I think that might be worth picking up. I guess another way to put it is that for how many miles I put in, I don't have the time or the money for someone else to do all the work on my bikes -- especially when I can pick up the parts online for a fraction of what I pay at the bike shop (even after my discount). Just had this installed to replace my completely worn Specialized FutureShock (which I think was actually a rebranded Rock Shox). It rides like a dream. Since most of my riding is on pavement, I have the preload cranked way up, which has increased my average speed by a good MPH or so. I really notice it on wet pavement because I'm now going so fast I'm kicking up all the spray into my face. The only downside to this fork was that it doesn't have a lockout, but the preload goes high enough that I don't really notice, plus if I actually hit something, there's no pain to me, the fork, or the bike. The reason I went with this one is that the steerer tube is sold separately, so I could still get a 1" threaded tube for my increasingly antiquated ride. Posted by  zow  at 7:45 PM on 3/8/09
