The Games People Play

3 Hearts

My other half and I like playing games -- especially with friends. When those games don't involve yards of plastic and copious amounts of shaving cream, we turn to some of our favourites on this page. This is a list specifically for the games we've played. At the moment it isn't meant to be exhaustive, more focused on what we liked and you might too.

NUCLEAR WAR CARD GAME: A comical cataclysmic card game for 2-6 players of all ages. A humorous confrontation between touchy world powers as each player attempts to sway his opponents' populations with diplomacy, propaganda, and finally nuclear... See more more

This is a game that originated during the Cold War and has seen a revival. A couple things that make this game so awesome is that there might not be a winner (as is often the case in war) and the game can end before the first round (due to "play immediately" type cards and the ability to automatically retaliate before dying).

I am thinking....do I really WANT this game OR do I really NOT want this game. My husband and I used to do games all the time. Then about once a month we had people we worked with at Sears (all ages, stages, etc) come over and play Trivial Pursuit or something. It was great. Then my kids got old enough and we had game night at least once a week with them. Then they had kids and our boys came along....and games were out for a bit. Now we have game night again once a week with our boys, and are hoping to be able to get all double digits family members (10 and up) together. NOT for this one though.....maybe 30 and up for this. LOL.

Best. Game. Ever. You have to have a lighthearted -- and maybe a bit morbid -- sense of humor for this game. The pop culture references are endless. I think we've got every card. I recommend starting with the basic set though and adding one expansion at a time, in order.

Did you ever see the horror movie..."Night of the Lupus" ? It is so hard to be scared to death by a cute wiggly nosed bunny....even if it is five stories tall.

The Settlers of Catan is a great strategy game based on building up your towns into cities using four basic resources. There's some luck involved, and with 3-4 players, a good deal of negotiating. We got the 10th Anniversary edition, which is a work of art in and of itself. This edition precludes the use of the extentions, but already incorporates most of the elements of seafarers and knights and cities.

Sounds soooo cool! Like Simcity, only you play with other people....a novel idea. I am going to add all your game sites to my favorites, 'cause I can't imagine picking these up at walmart.

Munchkin is a fun rather simple game that started by mocking D&D type games, but has expanded into mocking so much more. There are all different boosters and variations. The gameplay is rather quick, which is nice when you don't want to get embroiled in a full-up game of Killer Bunnies.

Gloom: The Game of...

The world of Gloom is a sad and benighted place. The sky is gray, the tea is cold, and a new tragedy lies around every corner. Debt, disease, heartache, and packs of rabid flesh-eating mice -- just when it seems like things can't get any worse, they... See more more

This is an extremely morbid game (the goal is to die as miserable as possible) with an interesting gameplay, using clear overlays over base cards. The real fun is in telling the stories of what's happening to these poor, torchered souls.

You ARE happy, right???? Just a tad worried, cause I really like having you for a friend.
